March 13, 2004 ROMEOVILLE, Ill.--Dustin Pfeifer sank six free throws in the final 1:23 of overtime Saturday to lead second-seeded Findlay to an 84-83 victory over seventh-seeded Indianapolis in a quarterfinal game of the NCAA Division II men's Great Lakes Regional Championship at Lewis University. Indianapolis led 81-78 when Ryan Hixson made a layup with 1:44 left. Pfeifer made two free throws on Findlay's next possession to draw the Oilers within one. The Greyhounds then committed two turnovers, and Pfeifer made them pay by netting four more free throws for an 84-81 Oilers lead. Luke Blank's 3-point attempt to tie went in and out and was tipped in by Jason Wright with :01 left to account for the final margin. Findlay (25-6) led 42-32 at the break after leading by as many as 14 points. Indianapolis, on the strength of 64-percent second-half shooting, charged back and took a 73-70 lead at the 4:47 mark following a 10-0 run. Findlay sent the game into overtime with two free throws by Matt Metzger at the 2:49 mark and one by Frank Phillips with 2:15 remaining. Indianapolis outshot Findlay 54 percent to 42 percent from the floor and earned a 42-32 rebounding advantage. But the Oilers countered by forcing 23 Greyhound turnovers, 14 on steals, and committing just 11 miscues. Indy's David Logan scored a game-high 24 points. Wright (7 of 7) scored 16 points, Hixson produced 13 points and 12 rebounds, and Rodney Rollins scored 14 points. Pfeifer topped Findlay's scoring chart with 20 points. Tyson McGlaughlin had 17 points and five steals, Phillips netted 16 points, and Brad Rethman and Metzger added 10 apiece. Findlay will face Southern Indiana, a 96-83 winner over Kentucky Wesleyan, in Sunday's 5 p.m. semifinal. 3/13/04 |
